The connection between Mind & Body

Pregnancy Week by Week and CranioSacral Therapy
By Carina Collins

The nine months of pregnancy are divided into three trimesters each consisting of three months duration (14 weeks each approx ). I have noticed that some common symptoms arise at each trimester that pregnant clients find are helped or alleviated with CranioSacral Therapy (CST).

Let's consider the first trimester (that is the 1st, 2nd and 3rd months of pregnancy).

The first weeks after conception are when the body's organs and systems are formed. This is known as the embryonic period. At eight weeks the baby (embryo) is smaller than your little toe yet all the internal organs are formed and some are functioning! Some women choose to come for CST in preparation for conception as these early weeks are so vital in your baby's development.

Some mums-to-be may wonder if it is safe to have CranioSacral treatments when they are pregnant?

It is safe and desirable as Cranio-sacral work helps the body in adapting to the changes throughout the 40 weeks and it is desirable to have your body functioning at its best to support your growing baby.

Another concern which I hear sometimes at my clinic is if CST will induce premature labour?

CranioSacral therapy when correctly applied by a qualified CST therapist never goes against what your body wants to do. However miscarriages do occur in the first 12 weeks and if there is something wrong with the pregnancy it may happen that the body wants to abort the fetus, then CST can assist the body in what it naturally wants to do.

Nausea is a common complaint in the early weeks and can be triggered by a sensitivity to smells and certain foods. These symptoms are eased by CranioSacral therapy and a treatment in the early stages of pregnancy allows you to relax, helps you to adapt to your changing body and to establish a close connection with your growing baby. As the touch in CranioSacral therapy is very gentle it is a most suitable treatment right from the early weeks of pregnancy.

Another symptom that experienced by the newly pregnant mum is that of tiredness. Joan came for CST when she was ten weeks pregnant. She had a toddler of 2 yrs and worked full time. During treatments using certain relaxation-inducing touch she entered a deep relaxation and sometimes even slept. Afterwards she felt better able to cope with her busy schedule and delivered a healthy baby boy Oliver at 39 weeks.

Second Trimester (4th, 5th, 6th ) months.

As the nausea and tiredness of the 1st trimester disappear (for most!), the second trimester is a time of well-being. A problem that I see with some clients at this stage is Heartburn/Acid-Reflux. This occurs as the growing baby is putting pressure on the stomach.

Maire attended my clinic suffering from reflux while expecting her third child. She told me that she had digestion problems during her previous two pregnancies and had heard from a friend that CranioSacral therapy could help ease the heartburn. During her first treatment I placed my hands on her lower ribs and within minutes she could feel the tightness around her diaphragm melt away. She felt afterwards that she had more space for the baby and the pressure on her oesophagus had released. This helped to reduce the acid flow from the stomach into the throat. Combining treatments with avoiding rich foods, eating smaller meals and wearing looser clothes also helped with the reflux.

If the mum-to-be is anxious and taking on more than she can handle, this may then result in tension headaches. I have often treated clients for backache and they will find that their headaches have also disappeared. CranioSacral Therapy helps the client to tune in with the message coming from their body. They may discover the underlying reason causing their tension headache i.e worries about labour or needing more rest. CST offers the time to look into what is really going on and the tools to access the solutions to these queries.

The Third Trimester ( 7th, 8th, 9th month).

Your body signals a slow-down in the third trimester when tiredness again re-appears and sometimes shortness of breath. In late pregnancy some women seem to suffer from a stuffy nose as hormones in the body (which are softening the vagina for birth) cause the membranes inside the nostrils and sinuses to swell. A gentle cranial treatment that releases facial and nasal bones especially eases this condition.

Some clients find that the CranioSacral treatments combined with attention to diet eases the congestion. And once the baby is born this form of sinusitis will disappear!

The most frequent problem that brings pregnancy clients to my clinic is back pain in the final weeks of pregnancy. This can be experienced at any stage of the pregnancy but is most common in the last trimester. CranioSacral treatment is an excellent treatment for backache and a few treatments combined with stretching exercises, yoga or swimming typically results in a better sleep and less pain and aches.

Sometimes I may just see a mum-to-be just before her due date. It is useful even at this late stage to have a CranioSacral treatment as it prepares the body for labor. Even if a labor stalls it seems to proceed within renewed energy after a treatment.

Finally - it is always wonderful to treat the newborn as it feels like a relationship has already been established while treating the mum during pregnancy.

Cesarean Section - Ensure Your Infant's Well Being Following a C-Section Or Other Birth Intervention
By Carina Collins

I gave birth to my children in 1991 and 1993 respectively. One of the most noticeable differences in birth practices between now and (way back!) then is the obvious increase in "scheduled" births.

Many of my new Mums come to me following these managed interventions.

You may have planned for a natural vaginal delivery but what happens if complications arise during birth?
These complications during labour may require your baby being delivered by:

  • Caesarean-section (c-section).
  • With the help of Forceps.
  • With the help of vacuum pump or suction.

Interventions like these, when necessary, can save lives. In my experience Craniosacral Therapy helps to eliminate, or minimise, the complications that arise as a result of these types of deliveries.

In CranioSacral Therapy, we work on the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord, extending from the bones of the skull (which make up the cranium) down to the tailbone area (or sacrum). It is considered that the role of this system in the development and performance of the brain and spinal cord is so vital that an imbalance or dysfunction in it can cause sensory, motor and/or neurological disabilities.

A CranioSacral Therapist uses a touch generally no heavier than the weight of a five cent coin. Skilled practitioners can monitor this rhythm at key body points to pinpoint the source of an obstruction or stress. Once a source has been determined, they can assist the natural movement of the fluid and related soft tissue to help the body self-correct.

I have noticed that most babies (and mums too!) often need assistance in dealing with the effects of a difficult labour. One of the reasons for this is that in the ideal birth scenario, nature has designed your baby's skull to be compressed as it travels through the birth canal during a vaginal birth.

Babies born by c-section miss out on this vital compression through the birth canal which helps balance the cranial bones. Babies born with the use of forceps or vacuum often experience undue stress on the head and face and strain patterns often develop in their bodies. The euphoria of the baby's safe arrival masks the stress that the baby has experienced. But soon problems arise.

You may notice your baby has problems with:

  • Sleeping
  • Feeding
  • Straining while going to the toilet
  • Excess crying
  • Ear infection
  • Flat spots or bulges on the head
  • Uneven ear or eye positions
  • Prefers feeding on one of their sides
  • Prefers lying on one side rather than another

With Craniosacral Therapy I use specific, gentle touch techniques to assess, resolve and eliminate the restrictions that cause these problems. The light pressure creates deep change - releasing the restrictions in the baby's tissue that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. This encourages the infant's body toward a natural alignment.

During the treatment the baby often needs to cuddle, feed or cry as balance is restored and emotion is released in the body. Mums and Dads often feel a sense of relaxation as the baby's Craniosacral system returns to optimum function.

I have found that treatment with Craniosacral therapy often benefit all babies following birth, but it is highly recommended for babies who have had birth complications.

Many new parents prepare for a baby's arrival by purchasing a crib. Some children, though, never seem to be able to sleep well in the crib. They fuss, they cry, and the only place they seem able to sleep is in a parents arms or lying next to them in a bed. That's the point where parents start to look for any solution to get some rest. Co-sleeping may be the answer.

Co-sleeping isn't a new concept. Many other countries have parents bringing their children to sleep in their own bed. Babies sleep better and longer, and parents do as well. Some cultures are even a little amazed that the Western world puts their children in "cages" to sleep. Our society waffles between experts who claim co-sleeping is a bad habit that will be difficult to break and experts who believe co-sleeping to be the best arrangement for all.

The benefits of co-sleeping have been proven. For breastfeeding mothers, co-sleeping with a child allows for easier feeding. Both mother and child can attend to needs while resting without much disturbance. There is no full waking with a need to cry for the child to receive attention. For tired parents, co-sleeping creates harmonized sleep patterns in which baby and mother tend to slumber and wake at the same periods. The increased contact of a familial bed also promotes attachment parenting, reassurance and comfort. Co-sleeping may also help prevent SIDS.

A familial bed is just as safe as having babies sleep in a crib. Of course, it is important for parents to ensure maximum safety by choosing a firm mattress, removing loose, fluffy bedding and installing a baby gate or setting the bed next to a wall. These safety precautions are the same for children who sleep in a crib; there is a gate, mattresses are firm, and there is often little bedding involved. In either case of crib-sleeping or co-sleeping, pillows are removed.

Co-sleeping should only be practiced in a household where parents are non-smoking and do not abuse drugs or alcohol. It is a myth that children who co-sleep with parents are at a greater risk of suffocation.

It is also a myth that children who co-sleep won't leave the family bed to gain independence. Think about this: How many teens do you know that sleep with their parents? Children will want to leave the family bed. Most parents report that children are more than willing to have their own bed at around ages two to three, when they are ready, physically, emotionally and mentally.

The point is to establish a situation that ensures the best rest possible for all involved, whether it be co-sleeping or crib sleeping. If the situation isn't working for one or all, change it. Being close to the people we love most isn't a habit that needs to be broken, nor is getting a good night's sleep supposed to be a struggle. What's important is a trusting, harmonious relationship at all times, during waking hours or sleeping ones!

Vaccination Decisions - Who Should You Trust?

By Sherri Tenpenny, DO

Most parents want to trust their pediatrician. We no longer live in extended families. Moms and grandmas frequently live far away so when Johnny gets sick, instead of consulting with those close to us who have taken care of sick kids, we confer with our doctor.

Most pediatricians are well meaning and want to do what they feel is in the best interest of children's health. However, when it comes to vaccination, pediatricians often go beyond helpful suggestions; they resort to fear tactics. Parents are told frightening, "worse case scenario" stories of a child who had serious complications from a childhood illness such as measles, mumps or chickenpox. The children who recovered uneventfully are never mentioned. The pressure to vaccinate can escalate and sometimes results in threats. Intimidated and believing the “doctor knows best,” the injections proceed.

Then you begin to read articles and books by doctors who have discovered problems with vaccines.

The information about vaccine dangers is not opinion but represents thousands of hours of research, documenting facts even most pediatricians don’t know. The information tackles mainstream thinking about vaccines head on. Importantly, the information is presented with detailed references. This new data causes feelings of confusion. It is radically different from what has been generally accepted about vaccination for more than two hundred years: “Vaccines are safe, effective, protective and cause no harm.” You spend hours researching both sides of the argument to determine which doctor is telling the truth, which information is correct. You struggle, you argue, and you often feel very conflicted.

Both doctors are convincing. Both speak with authority and present information you struggle to assimilate. Which guidelines should you follow? Which doctor should you trust?

Quite frankly, you shouldn’t trust either at face value.

You should trust your intuition, your gut feeling, your own internal guidance system. Sit quietly and privately, see how you “feel” when you consider vaccination. What does it feel like when you look at your precious baby and know that injections are planned at the next doctor visit? What does it feel like to think about not vaccinating? If both feelings are neutral or confusing, you need more information. If both feelings are equally strong and negative, examine your fears. Do you understand the real risks of the disease you want to prevent? Do you know the real risk of the vaccine? When one feeling is definitely stronger than the other, that is your instinct talking.

Moms know when something is not right with Johnny, even when he is not in sight. That’s intuition. On the other hand, mothers have cried while their child was being vaccinated, praying that “nothing would go wrong.” That's going against intuitive sense.

We have abdicated our personal power to professionals, particularly doctors, even though the medical industry has failed us miserably in many ways. Parents, it’s time to take back your power. Trust what you feel when considering vaccination. Know that you are intelligent and capable of reading and then understanding the risks vs the benefits. The more you listen to that "voice within," the louder it becomes. It is the best test of the vaccine information you hear.

Dr. Sherri J. Tenpenny is respected as one of the country’s most knowledgeable and outspoken physicians regarding the negative impacts of vaccines on health.
